Melbourne pop-funk-soul artist Dru Chen has just announced the release of his new single “Turnaround” and is offering Tone Deaf readers the chance to be the first to check out its futuristic artwork and receive free downloads of the audio and remix. Hurry though, the freebies are limited to the first 500!

Previously, Dru Chen’s successful first single ‘You Bring Out The Best In Me‘ has found a wide audience in the live music circuit, as well as online and on air, garnering in excess of 20,000 views on YouTube and been picked up for multiple airing by radio, including Triple R, PBS, SYN, and JOY FM.

Today, ‘Turnaround’ will be released amidst mounting anticipation. The single has an uncluttered aesthetic centered on layers of neo-soul keyboards and vocals that meander up and down three octaves.

The lead guitar is laden with wah-wah effects, playing off a hypnotic drum beat created by Graeme Pogson of The Bamboos. It is a confident throw-back to traditional soul-funk but the vocal treatment is decidedly poppy and contemporary. For what is on the surface a danceable tune, the lyrics betray an inner hysteria highlighted by Dru’s manic Prince-like falsetto screams.

For the ‘Turnaround’ remix, Dru teams up with glitch hop/electro producer Crazy Daylight for the creation of a Dâm-Funk-influenced 80s dance-funk explosion complete with glissando keyboards and electrifying slap bass.

Keep an eye on the horizon for ‘Turnaround’s impending film clip. Director Edwin Tejoz describes it as “DIY filmmaking pushed to the max” with “Sin City influences.” The ‘Turnaround’ video will premiere in March along with a launch show at The Workers Club on 22nd March with special guests Alta and Echo Drama.
