Contrary to earlier reports that Sue MacLellan was to be eased out of her role as Director of Liquor Licensing by not renewing her contract and merging her body with Victoria’s Gaming Authority, the State Government has offered her a slap on the way out by announcing this afternoon that they had appointed a new Director of Liquor Licensing for the next two years after all.

A press release issued by the Department of Consumer Affairs this afternoon stated:

“Consumer Affairs Minister Tony Robinson today announced the appointment of the new Director of Liquor Licensing, Mark Brennan.”

Following the usual bureaucratic waffling, the press release cut to the chase, saying:

“This Government understands the reform of the liquor licensing system has revealed some anomalies and we are working on practical solutions to assist the industry adjust to the new fee structure.”

“The new Director will be responsible for the ongoing application of the new fees, including working closely with licensees on structuring their businesses to get the most appropriate and affordable licence type.

“We also expect the new Director to continue implementing the Live Music Accord to ensure the ongoing viability of Victoria’s music venues and culture.”

This translates as ‘Sue you were a liability and we’re hoping that by putting this live music venue friendly apparatchik in, we might save a few inner city votes in the approaching state election’.
