Garage rocker Jay Reatard has died aged 29. The Memphis, Tennessee musician who had risen to prominence on the back of album Watch Me Fall had released a number of critically acclaimed 7” singles and toured Australia several times. According to Memphis’ Commercial Appeal newspaper website he was found dead in his apartment yesterday, January 13th, and appeared at this stage to have died in his sleep.
Reatard had his touring band quit on him in October a week before hitting the road on European and US dates. His record label Matador released a statement saying: ‘We are devastated by the death of Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., aka Jay Reatard. Jay was as full of life as anyone we’ve ever met, and responsible for so many memorable moments as a person and artist. We’re honored to have known and worked with him, and we will miss him terribly’.
