Big Day Out 2012 Lineup Announced

Written by Nicholas Jones on 29 September 2011

It’s finally here, a day many have been waiting for months to come, undoubtedly one of the biggest announcements in local music and definitely the most speculated. It all started this year on 27th July when Herald Sun scribe and Triple M reporter Nui Te Koha announced that we’d most likely see performances by Queens of the Stone Age, Blink 182, Eminem, and Prince in 2012.

Eminem subsequently announced a solo tour in December ruling him out of contention, and Nui himself soon ruled our Blink-182 after he was reminded that Travis hates to fly – making it extremely difficult to get to the other side of the world.

The next rumour was that Kasabian would make an appearance, and although more than a few eyebrows were raised given Kasabian’s involvement in an event for a credit card company in Melbourne in October. However last week in an interview with Adelaide streetmag Rip It Up, frontman Tom Meighan confirmed the appearance, the only actual leak prior to the otherwise watertight lineup announcement.

‘Industry insiders’ such as the BigDayOutSpy were also a feature on the landscape this year, although their time in the sun quickly faded after numerous predictions were immediately disproved, such as Opeth who also announced their own tour. Despite this, rumours have persisted. First with Florence & The Machine, and My Chemical Romance, and later with Cake, and Odd Future.

But perhaps the biggest thing to happen leading up to the official lineup reveal was the announcement yesterday that none of the headline bands began with the letter ‘P’ or ‘R’, ruling out hot favourites Radiohead, as well as earlier predictions Red Hot Chili Peppers, Prince, and 2nd favourite Pearl Jam.

And now we’re here. So sit back and relax. We’ll be updating the lineup as it is announced. So strap yourself in for one wild ride!
