Lana Del Rey Television Debut A Train Wreck

Written by Nicholas Jones on 16 January 2012

The story of Lana Del Rey and her overnight shot into indie stardom is getting murkier by the day. But accusations of major label manufacturing and her daddies deep pockets seem like child play compared to the train wreck that was the singing sensations debut television performance on Saturday Night Live.

Already fighting back criticism of high-level meddling for even being invited on to the show, an honour usually reserved for artists that have at least released an album, the 25-year-old singer will now be fighting criticisms that she has zero stage presence and well, can’t really sing.

Earlier in the week Del Rey hit back at her critics saying “I got it because I’m a good musician. And I may not have a record out now, but I have been singing for a very long time, and I think that ['SNL' creator] Lorne Michaels knows that, and everyone over there knows that.”

But all the name calling that dominated last week seems like highly irrelevant now that Del Rey may very well have just blown what was supposed to be her big debut to mainstream America. Even her most diehard fans have admitted on forums online to finding her rendition of ‘Blue Jeans’ particularly hard to watch.

But it was actress Juliette Lewis who has captured the mood the best, jumping on Twitter shortly after the episode was aired saying “Wow watching this ‘singer’ on SNL is like watching a 12 yearold in their bedroom when theyre pretending to sing and perform #signofourtimes.”

Lana Del Rey releases her debut album, ‘Born To Die’, on January 30. She is travelling to Australia for two sold-out showcase shows in Melbourne and Sydney a month later.

Watch her two performances below if you dare and let us know if you think it’s as bad as everyone is saying.
