Barack Obama ‘Slow Jams’ The News With The Roots

Written by Nicholas Jones on 27 April 2012

US President Barack Obama is up to it again, one again flaunting his ‘cool’ credentials after appearing on US talk show Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to ‘slow jam’ the news, backed by the programme’s house band, The Roots.

‘The Preezy of the United Steezy’, as Fallon refers to Obama during the skit, appears alongside The Roots and MC Black Thought as part of his reelection campaign for the presidency this November.

During the skit, Fallon, Obama, and Black Thought jam along to music while they argue against higher interest on student loans and state the case to ‘keep college affordable’.

But the appearance of Obama on the show isn’t the first time the President has grooved along in front of cameras.

Earlier in the year he got up and sang with blues legend BB King and Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger at a White House event, following his impromptu performance of Al Green’s soul classic ‘Let’s Stay Together’ at a fundraiser in January.

“We were trying to get you to sing that,” Guy said at the time. “Because I heard you had sung Al Green, so you started something so you gotta keep it up!” Jagger then held out a microphone, and the ever cool Obama decided it was better to take the musicians up on the offer and belted out a few verses to cheers from the White House crowd.

After footage emerged of the President singing the tune, Green’s album sales shoot up over 200%.

U.S. President Barack Obama has published his first Spotify playlist, as the President's official Twitter account announced early on Thursday. The playlist features a number of classic such as Al Green, and REO Speedwagon, as well as some surprisingly contemporary picks such as Wilco, Arcade Fire, and Florence + The Machine.
