As previously reported, the seminal fore-fathers of alt-rock – Dinosaur Jr have a new album all ready to go, and today have revealed the first taste of it in the form of “Watch The Corners”.

The fuzz-rock elders’ new studio album, I Bet On Sky, is the band’s eleventh studio album and is set for release on September 18 in the US via Jagjaguwar, who have just released the stream for “Watch The Corners” which is a heady dose of their classic sound. A mid-tempo groove from the classic lineup of J. Mascis, Lou Barlow and drummer Murph, who first reunited back in 2005.

The track shows the trio fizzing with renewed energy, thrashing through some big, crunching chords and ending with a big ol’ session of guitar shredding from J. Mascis. Its sound follows on from the stick-to-their-guns tunes of 2007′s Beyond and Farm two years later.

Along with the new track, Mascis has conducted an interview with Rolling Stone to discuss the forthcoming album, which was recorded at the laconic musician’s home in Amherst, Massachusetts. Mascis says the new album focuses on gentler melodies in the band’s evolution. “I guess on this record,” explains Mascis, “I wasn’t as worried if we could play the songs live… the other two records [2007’s Beyond and 2009’s Farm], I was thinking of it being more songs that we could play live and tour more. I guess that’s what’s kind of different about this album: I just did what I felt would sound good.”

Remarking on the band’s chemistry since their 2005 truce, Mascis notes, “we pretty much figured out how to make it work, I guess… Depends on the day, it changes a lot.”

Band member and bassist, Lou Barlow, who also moonlights as a solo artist and is part of Sebadoh, spoke to Tone Deaf earlier this year saying, “I’m currently in that headspace, enjoying how each band has its own idiosyncrasies and I’ve rediscovered my love for being one of three people in a room working out song ideas together.”

It certainly sounds it from the new material. Barlow was out promoting his solo material earlier this year, trailing frontman J Mascis’ who also did a short run of shows in January; but as is always the case with a new release, we’ll keep our fingers crossed for a trip down-under from the full band in the near future.
