Scottish rock trio, Biffy Clyro, have revealed the first details of their upcoming studio album, their sixth, after debuting a brand new track on BBC Radio 1 earlier this week.
The band’s follow-up to their breakthrough 2009 record, Only Revolutions, is due for release later this year and be called Opposites, potentially a double disc release with its title referring to one side featuring positive lyrics and the other having more of a negative sentiment. But the Scots have offered the first taste of the new record in lead sing, ‘Stingin’ Belle’.
After debuting the brand new track live on British radio, the band’s frontman Simon Neil, told presenter Zan Lowe about the peculiarities of promoting a new record: “”It’s a strange situation when you’re revealing what you’ve been working on for the past couple of years – it doesn’t get any easier, but it’s still exciting,” said the scruffy gentleman. “We’re definitely a bit nervous but we’re very excited,” he continued.
The new single features the trio expanding on the stadium-sized anthem aesthetic of their recent work, focussing on Neil’s earnest lyricism and wiry riffs bouncing off of the rhythm section of brothers James and Ben Johnston, and their muscular foundation. A radio-baiting tune that rivals the likes of Foo Fighters, but with the grit and bite of Queens of the Stone Age’s swaggering rock – oh, and there’s bagpipes, so there!
Speaking of the new track, Neil added, “it was one of the first songs that really clicked when we were recording it,” saying that it was an accurate representation of what we can expect of the new album: “It shows how over-the-top the record is.”
Neil called Opposites “weird” in its appeal, but that they were “still keeping things musical” while “still being as weird as we’ve always been,” adding curiously “it might be our last really over the top record.”
Though they’ve scheduled touring commitments through Europe for the end of the year, Australia’s festival season may be a good opportunity for the trio to head to our shores for their first appearance since their headline tour, as well as supporting Muse’s arena shows, at the end of 2010.
As for who they’d suit, maybe Soundwave 2013 would be the best bet, and considering its lineup has been frequently leaked ahead of its imminent announcement, maybe we can expect to have our wishes granted sooner than we might expect.
