With only 25 days of 2013 left, the musical retrospectives of the last 12 months are beginning to roll in thick and fast.

There’s already been our own looks at the year’s best album artwork, top live concerts, and great albums of 2013 that you may have missed, while a contingent of Aussie artists has cracked international best-of lists and Triple J once again opens up the polls on the Hottest 100.

With so much music, it can be a little overwhelming to catch everything, especially in this modern day era of ‘click fast, think later’. So what better way to play catch-up on the year’s most popular songs than with that most modern of internet genres: the mashup.

Thankfully, two international producers have already done the legwork, providing two separate but similarly conceived mash-ups of 2013’s biggest hits.

So if you want a snappy overview of the year’s hits and enjoy hearing all your faves in one serving (or maybe just emerged from that cryogenic chamber), these cross-pollinations provide a year-spanning look; not just of the songs, but also the accompanying music videos and all the big budget, highly stylised shenanigans they have to offer.

The first comes from Daniel Kim and the fourth entry in his annual Pop Danthology series. The 2013 edition manages to squeeze 68 tracks into a very slick five-and-a-half-ish minutes of kinetic hooks, pop choruses, and sleekly produced chart-bothering stars.

There’s everything from über-hits like Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’, Lorde’s ‘Royals’, and the ‘Harlem Shake’, through to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Calvin Harris, and the self-ranking Jay Z, all arriving in a recognisable (and at at times annoyingly familiar) rush.

“I search all over the internet like a determined chef searches different markets and grocery stores for his ingredients,” explains Kim on his personal blog, appropriately titled The Gift Of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Pop Disorder).

Going into detail (graphs, charts, and all), Kim explains the Pop Danthology 2013 took 180 hours for the mashup chef to whisk up, and though “there was a shortage of high quality audio parts compared to previous years,” he writes, “I was able to compile a ready-to-mix list of 179 (73 vocal, 41 instrumental, 65 complete with both) music files.” (You can view Daniel Kim’s proverbial shopping list – the full list of artists in the Pop Danthology mix – at the bottom.)

The second 2013 megamix comes from DJ Earworm, the alias of San Francisco producer Jordan Roseman, who has his own long-running mashup series – The United States Of Pop, which has attracted nearly 125 million YouTube views total since 2008.

DJ Earworm’s latest instalment, his seventh, is dubbed ‘Living The Fantasy’, and while it only splices 25 tracks compared to Kim’s 68, it’s no less dazzling in its own five-and-a-half genre-jam based on the biggest songs of the year, according to the US Billboard charts.

So yes, that does obviously include overlap with the Pop Danthology, including ‘Get Lucky’, ‘Royals’, along with chart-busting hip hop (Eminem, Pharrell Williams), pop rock (Imagine Dragons, OneRepublic), and bouts of twerk from Miley Cyrus.
