Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith has had enough of people making visual comparisons between him and Hollywood funnyman Will Ferrell. Now, the two are set to officially settle their doppelgänger differences once and for all in a musical battle of skill.

Last week, the Chilis skin-thumper called out for the actor-comedian to “stop impersonating me!” after the Anchorman star’s reddit ‘Ask Me Anything’ session in which he humorously pointed out: “A lot of people think that it’s me playing for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But that would be an insult to Chad Smith. The truth of the matter is there is no Will Ferrell. Only Chad Smith.”

In response, Smith sent a video challenge to Ferrell – via the Instagram comedian’s own FunnyOrDie.com social media – to a public drum battle; “I’ve seen your skills, you don’t got ‘em, let’s go, golden cowbell… winner… boom!”

Following the call-out, the RHCP drummer took to reddit for his own reddit AMA, where the topic of the drum battle inevitably came up, “That’s kinda up to Mr. Ferrell,” says Smith – tongue firmly planted in cheek; calling him a “delusional imposter… because I am obviously more talented and handsome than he is.” Adding: “I hope that Mr. Ferrell decides to do the right thing and get this over with once and for all.”

Facing up to the call, Mr. Ron Burgundy himself showed up to hijack the reddit Q&A:

“Hi, Chad. Will Ferrell here. I saw your video and I graciously accept your invitation to a drum battle. If we can raise $300,000 for Cancer For College I will face off with you in the greatest drum vs. cowbell showdown the world has ever seen.

We can do it on stage at a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert or in front of a mutually convenient public library. Your call. Also, would you rather fight a hundred duck sized ducks or one horse sized horse?”

While we may never know if Smith would rather engage in combat with a stallion or a flock of mallards, we do know that this celebrity rhythm-off is on. Smith’s response? “Hey Will, I’ve logged back in JUST to accept your challenge. Bring IT!”

Sure, the whole thing seems totally fabricated (the whole FunnyOrDie and reddit connection – hardly coincidence), but it doesn’t really matter, the chance for the two lookalikes to square off live for charity is a damn good idea and going to make for a great spectacle – Ferrell’s cowbell skills are legendary, and as Step Brothers proved, he’s good on the drum kit with both limbs (and reproductive organs).

For his part, Smith best avoid any controversial miming – a la the Chili Peppers’ recent Super Bowl Halftime Show – for his duel with Ferrell. In fact, the reddit session that produced the official lookalike face-off was used for Smith to promote the fact he was auctioning off the Super Bowl drumkit – also for charity.

The drummer has also taken to twitter to share that he’s “gettin juiced” to prepare for the Ferrell face-off, as well as dusting up on his cowbell skills in a cheeky impersonation of his forthcoming opponent.
