What’s cooler than watching a virtuoso drummer impressively hammering away at his kit?

Being able to actually see a master drummer’s many co-ordinated moves as he’s smashing away at his instrument.

That’s the basic premise behind this amazing new little video that visually traces the movements of the drummer’s sticks as they arc and swirl across cymbals, toms, and snares in a flurry of arm movements. Imagine an epic drum solo meets The Matrix and you’re halfway there.

Put together by whiskey makers Ballentine’s as part of their ‘Stay True Stories’ series, the neat visual effect is created by equipping professional UK drummer Ben Mead with a special glowing pair of sticks then using a long exposure camera technique to capture the movements of the light-sticks, as Gizmodo (via The Awesomer) reports.

But rather than just a static shot, a high-tech rig further captures Mead’s fluid movements into a full 360 rotation of the laser-like squiggles produced by his drumming.

The awesome visual results speak for themselves. It’s a rather costly set-up to create, but it’s got hankering for seeing the unique visual technique applied to a music video or concert performance – or even other instruments. Imagine seeing your favourite band sketch a series of light doodles at a gig.
