Would you believe that there’s a pair of gloves out there that can create music? Well, with the wave of her magical fingers, British songstress Imogen Heap, has designed an instrument that does just that.

You may recognise the 36-year old famous for her autotune hit ‘Hide and Seek’ as well as her work in the duo Frou Frou. Now you can partner Heap’s name to her stunning technical project, the Mi.Mu Gloves.

These majestical gloves are designed for artists who as Heap suggests to Deezen, want to “make music on on the move, in the flow and more humanly.”

Aside from the notion of organic movement thus creating organic sound, Heap believes her creation will provide a far more entertaining live experience for music-fans.

With the aid of the gloves, Heap hopes to liberate the artist, freeing their movements on-stage  “most of us on our small team are musicians who are tired of being stuck behind computer screens, keyboards, faders, knobs, and buttons to make our music”.

Without delving to deep into the confusing mechanics detailed in the innovation, the Mi.Mu Gloves transmit directly through WiFi and track: the orientation of your hand, the flex of your fingers, your current hand posture, the direction of your hand and sharp movements such as drum hits.

In what appears as some kind of alien-like ability, Heap slips on her gloves and demonstrates the simplicity behind her  creation. In merely raising her hand up and down, a plethora of sonic shimmering fills the air. It truly is a stunning spectacle, take a glance as Heap chats with Deezen:

As the Londoner confirms, these gloves of sound are going through the prototype process, Heap seeking the most light, comfortable hand instrument to date.

In surging forward, the production obsessor has begun a Kickstarter campaign in attempts to lift the technology out of her home basement studio and to the masses. As the profile reads, “we are making the first Mi.Mu gloves available to people who want to work with us to shift the paradigm of how music is made and performed.”

If you’re keen to slip your hands into a pair of these gloves, you’ll need a healthy stack of pounds, £1200 to be exact, which will score you your very own Mi.Mu Gloves and accompanying software to create your own out-of-this-world sounds; Heap and her team are more than exuberant in lifting this project off the ground, “let’s change the way we make music!” they exclaim.

By allowing access to their innovative open-source software and user-friendly instruments – they just might do that.
