Gotye Wins 2011′s J Award

The 7th annual J Awards, hosted by national youth radio station triple j, were held last night at an event in Sydney at the Oxford Arts Factory, where The Middle East, Ball Park Music, Big Scary, The Jezabels, Papa vs Pretty, Kimbra, Drapht, Architecture In Helsinki, Gotye and Art vs Science went head to head for the honour of winning Australian Album Of The Year.

In the end the unstoppable Gotye, who just recently walked home with six ARIA Awards, won the title for his third album Making Mirrors which has been amazing fans and critics alike since it was released.

“It’s so much cooler than a big pointy metal thing,” Wally (AKA Gotye) said while accepting the award. “But seriously every album on that list is so good I feel thoroughly undeserving but hugely thankful to everyone current and past at triple j and everyone that listens to the station.”

“It’s a good 10 or 11 years since I started sending demos to everybody at triple j and I really have everybody to thank for listening to my music. Thanks very much.”

Other awards included Music Video Of The Year which was a contest between Children Collide, Gotye, Bluejuice, Hermitude, and Art Vs Science. Director Emma Tomelty, who crafted Hermitude’s clip for ‘Speak Of The Devil’ ended up with the honours after some stiff competition.

Brisbane act Ball Park Music took home Unearthed Artist of The Year which has a rich pedigree with previous winners including Boy & Bear, Young & Restless, John Steel Singers and The Middle East.
