Gotye To Appear On Saturday Night Live

Gotye To Appear On Saturday Night Live

Written by Nicholas Jones on 21 March 2012

If the sky is the limit, Melbourne musician Gotye seems to be paying no attention as he takes his music overseas after dominating Australia winning both the J Awards and several ARIA Awards.

His meteoric rise to fame continues unabated overseas with news this morning that he’s been booked as the musical gust for an upcoming episode of Saturday Night Live.

This season of Saturday Night Live has seen a number of emerging artists booked to play, including the controversial appearance by Lana Del Rey that was trashed so badly the singer ended up cancelling her entire touring schedule to go back to the drawing board.

Gotye made is US television debut earlier in the year when he appeared with fellow Australian-based singer Kimbra on Jimmy Kimmel Live following the unexpected success of their duet, Somebody That I Used To Know.

The success of that single has also helped propel Kimbra into the spotlight. The Melbourne-based singer must be thanking her lucky stars as she prepares to embark on an Australian tour after it came out last month she wasn’t Gotye’s original choice.

That single has now been on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US for 10 consecutive weeks, it’s gone #1 in the UK, New Zealand, Ireland, Austria, and Poland where it stayed #1 for a record 16 weeks.

In fact in Poland his album Making Mirrors was certified platinum after only one day.

But his success isn’t only confined internationally. Back home ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ sat atop the ARIA charts for a full eight weeks making it the highest charting song here since Save Garden’s ‘Truly Madly Deeply’ in 1997.

Gotye is expected to play a number of songs off Making Mirrors when he appears on the April 14th episode of the popular sketch show, which will be hosted by Academy Award-nominee Josh Brolin.

His appearance comes towards the end of his sold-out tour across North America, which will end in his debut US festival appearance at Coachella.
