Grinspoon Tease New Album, Leak Plans For 2013 Tour

Written by Al Newstead on 10 August 2012

One of NSW’s most enduring rock bands, Grinspoon, are making a splash back into the Australian music scene.

Having already announced their return to the festival circuit, with appearances at Newcastle’s Fat As Butter Festival in September and a key slot on 2013′s Big Day Out bill. Before then though, fans will be treated to a brand new album from the four-piece, their first in three years.

Entitled Black Rabbits, news of the band’s forthcoming studio album was released alongside an album trailer (definitely one of the year’s biggest trends) featuring a rapidfire collection of talking heads interviews with frontman Phil Jamieson, guitarist/vocalist Pat Davern, Joe Hansen and drummer Kristian Hopes.

The band talk up the album as containing a new turn in the band’s career and sonic evolution, with Jamieson noting, “some songs are really left-field that we’ve never done before ” while Hopes says Black Rabbits will be “a definite statement.”

In fact, in a forthcoming interview with Tone Deaf, the Grinspoon drummer spoke about the road to recording a new album: “We’ve put a lot of hard work into this album and it’s taken probably about a year to put together so we really believe in it and we’re going to be touring a lot – we hope the fans like it.”

He also indicated the band’s plans to embark on an extensive national tour for their new tunes, “that’s coming up in March/April 2013 – we’re going regional and all the little places we’ve never been. We haven’t done headline shows in 3-4 years so we’re really excited about that.”

Hopes claims Black Rabbits is not a strict follow-up to 2009′s Six to Midnight, which the sticks man calls “a bunch of songs that we wanted to put out together and was a heavier rock album,” whereas Black Rabbits, “is more of a studio record that we have broken up and produced. It’s a bit more radio friendly but it’s just another turn in our career.”

Meanwhile, the band’s official website has posted the aforementioned trailer along with a countdown clock, which puts it at a late September release.
