I Oh You Expands Roster, Sign City Calm Down

Written by Al Newstead on 6 September 2012

Melbourne-based label/party provocateurs I Oh You have been adding to their enviable stable as of late. With the likes of Bleeding Knees Club and DZ Deathrays already under their belt – who recently joined forces to decimate venues around the country for the appropriately titled Call The Cops tour - I Oh You has now added another fresh face to their roster.

Johann Ponniah, the self-described ‘nice guy’ of the label describes how “before I committed to dropping out of university and officially making I Oh You my full time “job”, I used to be the night manager of a club in Melbourne. One dreary winter’s night I saw an act take the stage like an icy wind and snap the audience out of their stupor.”

The band in question? Melbourne’s City Calm Down, the record group’s latest signing in a recent round-up that includes Violent Soho, dropping their first new single in two years; and Triple J faves, the youthful Snakadaktal.

I Oh You are also releasing City Calm Down’s new EP, entitled Movements, on the 2nd of November; building on the group’s “ecstasy of New Order synths, laconic New Wave vocals and illuminated, laser-tested production,” as our reviewer called it, in our write-up of the ‘live electronic’ outfit’s double A side single, Dare/ Burn Slow.

The quartet have already shared stages with similarly stadium-filling sounding acts like Faithless, Miami Horror and Last Dinosaurs, as well as opening the main stage at Good Vibrations 2011 in their hometown.

I Oh You’s Ponniah adds that the band have “been bunkered down with producer (and our good friend!) Malcolm Besley (Snakadaktal, Gold Fields) to track and mix the forthcoming EP over the past three weeks.”

Our first taste of City Calm Down’s Movements comes in the title track, a short interlude that you can view/listen to below:
