J Awards 2012 Nominations Revealed Including Tame Impala, The Rubens

Written by Nicholas Jones on 1 November 2012

It must be that time of year again when festivals announce lineups, and awards nominations start flying thick and thin. Early off the rank are the J Awards who have announced the nominees for the years best album, best music video, and best upcomer on Triple J Unearthed.

Last years awards held in Sydney at the Oxford Arts Factory saw the unstoppable Gotye, who had just recently walked home with six ARIA Awards, win the title for his third album Making Mirrors which went on to become an international smash hit alongside his single ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ which went number one in multiple countries including in the United States and here in Australia.

“It’s so much cooler than a big pointy metal thing,” Wally (AKA Gotye) said while accepting the award last year. “But seriously every album on that list is so good I feel thoroughly undeserving but hugely thankful to everyone current and past at triple j and everyone that listens to the station.”

“It’s a good 10 or 11 years since I started sending demos to everybody at triple j and I really have everybody to thank for listening to my music. Thanks very much.”

Adding Gotye to their belt, in the eight short years of its existence the J Awards have gained a reputation for earmarking the best talent this country has to offer. Other previous winners include Tame Impala, Sarah Blasko, The Presets, The Panics, Hilltop Hoods, & Wolfmother.

The judging panel consists of the music team at triple j, headed up by the triple j Music Director, who take note of what listeners are excited about, talking about, requesting & seeing live. triple j Unearthed producing staff are also involved in the nomination and winner selection of the Unearthed award.

You can see the nominations for the 8th Annual J Awards below. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in the last week of November.
