Spotify is currently the leader of the booming streaming services market in Australia, which has collectively been projected to generate approximately AU$1 billion for the global music industry this year.

Having launched in Australia in May this year, Spotify now boasts a library of over 18 million tracks and a user-base of about 10 million worldwide.

Now Spotify, which was recently announced to be undergoing a redesign that will launch a new browser-based version of the service, has released a Top 20 list that reveals the most played artists and albums that Australian listeners are streaming.

Topping out the list is the consistently controversial pop songstress Lana Del Rey, whose record Born To Die was the most played album in Australia this year. Del Rey was recently in the country for Splendour In The Grass, as well as a string of sideshows, and has also recently released a revamped Paradise Edition of her debut album.

Also included on the list is the 2012 Mercury Music Prize winners alt-J, with their debut album An Awesome Wave checking in as the 13th most played album. The inventive quartet also recently graced Australian shores for a whirlwind tour of two massively hyped and near-instantly selling out shows, which frontman Joe Green said “made it feel like home”. The Leeds four-piece will be returning to Australia for Laneway Festival in February next year.

Coldplay’s impossible to pronounce Mylo Xyloto was the 15th most streamed album, off the back of a massive Australian tour that was “a wild success” of “undying spirit and celebration”, according to our Tone Deaf reviewer.

Spotted the trend yet? The lists clearly demonstrate a correlation, that Australian listeners are flocking to stream the artists that have toured Australia, with a significant number of artists on both lists having toured the country in recent months

Continuing this pattern, indie darlings The xx impressively claimed two spots on the list, with 2012’s Coexist coming in as the 11th most streamed album, backed up the trio’s self-titled debut album taking out 12th spot; the indie darlings having toured and played two coveted sideshows earlier in the year for Splendour In The Grass.

Spotify also released the most streamed artists in Australia, with Maroon 5 coming in at first place. Taylor Swift, who is currently on Australian shores for the ARIAs – which took place last night, with Gotye sweeping the prize pool – checked in at #16, while The xx were the 3rd most streamed artist after dominating the albums list.

Having smashed Spotify’s record for streams globally with 8 million streams in the first week of the release of their sophomore album Babel, Mumford & Sons were similarly popular in Australia, with the album being the 6th most streamed, while the English folk troubadours were the 5th most popular artist overal – again, after a successful tour down under, including their Gentlemen Of The Road mini-festival in regional NSW.

Also gracing the lists were the likes of David Guetta, Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen (who apparently has an album) and Chris Brown. Good job Australia.
