With the renovations on its bandroom nearing completion, Sydney’s Newtown Social Club has announced the first live gigs booked for the venue.

Set to open in early May, the Newtown Social Club has been open for business since last year when operators took over the site of former Sydney live music venue the Sando (after it went into receivership in 2012), but the new Sydney live music venue’s owners have been promising that the bandroom has been well worth the long wait.

Set to christen the new 300 capacity venue, fitted with a “world class PA” is a number of Aussie artists and international touring artist, help warming up the bandroom before it begins hosting live music up to seven nights a week.

Kicking off proceedings is the Perch Creek Family Jugband, launching their album Jumping On The Highwire on Monday 12th May, followed by performances from legendary guitarist Ed Kuepper (of The Saints, Bad Seeds, and Laughing Clowns), singer-songwriter Kim Churchill and a double bill from emerging hip hop acts Citizen Kay and Tkay Maidza.

June will see the Newtown Social Club hosting gigs from Grammy-nominated Hiatus Kaiyote leader Nai Palm, prolific British songsmith, Robyn Hitchcock, and Daniel Champagne. See below for full dates, tickets, and details.

The Newtown Social Club forms part of the live music venue folio of Corner Presents, along with Melbourne’s iconic Corner Hotel, Northcote Social Club, Shebeen, and 170 Russell (formerly Billboard The Venue). Each venue is being programmed, and promoted by Corner Presents after they absorbed bookers Way Over There as part of a major shakeup in early February.

“The Newtown Social Club team would like to sincerely thank Sydney’s live music community for their patience over the last year while the venue has navigated through the building works approval process and the building renovations themselves,” wrote Corner Presents in a statement issued today.

The team aims to “provide the same relaxed atmosphere that’s known and loved at its Melbourne sister venue, the Northcote Social Club. Somewhere to eat and drink before or after a show, friendly staff and a calendar of national and international touring artists in the brand new, upstairs band room.”

The news of the Newtown Social Club’s 300-cap bandroom follows shortly after news that Sydney is being gifted with two new live music venues: The Roller Den in Erskineville and the Lewisham Hotel.

Thankfully, both venues fall outside of the revised ‘Sydney CBD Entertainment Precinct’ that’s being affected by the strict new lockout and curfew laws that were imposed on Sydney by the NSW Government last month.
