The Brand New Heavies Announce Australian Tour 2012

Written by Al Newstead on 2 July 2012

In yet more news of 90s acts reuniting and heading downunder, soul funk The Brand New Heavies who reformed in 2005 after a decade apart, have announced their return to Australia following their sell out shows in Melbourne and Sydney in 2010.

These upcoming dates will mark the legendary British band’s milestone 21st birthday and see The Brand New Heavies playing intimate venues in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

All four original members – Simon Bartholomew (guitar), Jan Kincaid (drums), Andrew Levy (bass) and of course fan favourite lead singer N’Dea Davenport – will be in attendance for these very special performances.

With a career spanning more than two decades, The Brand New Heavies were instrumental in the development of the London based Acid Jazz scene, alongside other notable career artists such as Jamiroquai and Incognito.

In 1990, the Heavies found its voice with the addition of lead singer N’Dea Davenport, and it didn’t take long for the group to score their first US hit in ‘Never Stop’ (which charted at #3 on the charts), a highlight from its self-titled debut album. While their second album Heavy Rhyme Experience: Vol. 1, saw them paired with pioneering hip-hop artists like Grand Puba, Kool G. Rap and Gang Starr’s Guru, among others.

The Heavies continued to gain momentum both in UK and America in the 90s where they notched up a string of Top 20 hits with tracks including ‘Never Stop’, ‘Stay This Way’, ‘Dream on Dreamer’ and ‘Sometimes’ – establishing the Heavies as a creative and commercial force.

Since reuniting two years ago after a chance meeting in New York, the band released a critically acclaimed new album in 2006 called Get Used To It and in 2009, after continuous touring, released their first live album – Live In London. This September, they bring their tour – and their 21st birthday – to Australian soil.
