Weezer Announce Australian Tour 2013 To Play ‘Blue Album’ In Full

Written by Al Newstead on 12 July 2012

Thought yesterday’s news that Blink 182 are heading back to Australian soil for the first time in a decade was good? Did you get über-excited over The Living End and Regurgitator’s upcoming nostalgia-tastic tours? You ain’t seen nothing yet….

Today we confirm one of Australia’s most long-awaited tour announcements of its kind. Weezer are finally heading back down-under for the first time in sixteen years, playing four very special shows in January next year!

First gracing our shows way back in October 1996, for the first and only time, in support of their influential second album, Pinkerton, released the same year. The US ‘geek rock’ outfit’s absence from Australia has been so legendary that many had long given up hope that they’d ever return. Despite incessant rumours of potential tours and unrivalled fervour amongst fans, Chugg Entertainment have finally wrangled the group for an Australian tour for January 2013.

The news get even better with the extra bonus that their tour will follow on from the back of their recent US concepts shows, performing a collection of greatest hits and rarities from their two-decade, eight-album long career – including performing their self-titled 1994 album in its entirety.

That’s right, The Blue Album – live, from start to finish.

These special Ausralian shows will act as a celebration for older fans, revelling in the nostalgia of the band’s classic early period of 1994′s eponymous ‘Blue’ Album and 1996′s Pinkerton; while a newer, younger generation of fans will be working back from the ever-evolving rock band’s more recent albums including 2002′s Green Album, 2008′s Red Album, and most recently 2010′s Hurley.

Growing from their influential 90s alt-rock roots to their current status as a pre-eminent arena rock act, Weezer’s recent shows have harkened back to their early material, and the band’s long anticipate return will finally bring this special experience to Australia.

The Best Covers By Weezer
The Best Covers By Weezer

Iconic band Weezer melted our hearts when they entered the stage in the 90s and cemented their title as one of the nerdiest bands in history. Yes, they're geeks. But that's their appeal and with songs such as 'Buddy Holly' and 'Beverly Hills' who's complaining? Weezer have made a whole bunch of our slideshows before, last but not least when they offered their own version of the snuggie which we featured in Weird Band Merch. But we thought it might be time to take a step back and have a look at something Weezer have been doing for years. Yes, we're looking at the best covers Weezer has ever performed. Sure, it's silly and nerdy. But we can't think of a more fitting tribute. Watch this slideshow »
