Corey Taylor Confirms Stone Sour For Soundwave 2013

Written by Al Newstead on 25 July 2012

With Big Day Out announcing their 2013 lineup that’ll surely please the indie crowd (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells, Animal Collective et al.), fans of the heavier end of the musical spectrum are looking to Soundwave Festival to provide their fix of the faster, furious breed of band.

Last week, we rounded up the confirmations and potential bill appearances following a tweet from Soundwave promoter, AJ Maddah that confirmed that full Soundwave 2013 lineup would be available in a matter of weeks, sometime in early August.

Today however, some more surreptitious tweeting has mean another lineup leak for the as-yet unconfirmed bill.

Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor has confirmed the strong rumors that his other metal act, Stone Sour are confirmed for Soundwave 2013.

It will be the band’s third appearance at the music festival in a row, the news coming from an interview with Blunt magazine, confirming that Taylor would be bringing Stone Sour back for a 2013 appearance.

Their festival appearance will probably be the first chance fans will get to hear the band’s forthcoming album, House of Gold and Bones in the live setting. Due for release in the lead-up to the 2013 tour.

Soundwave boss, AJ Maddah, previously offered a simple ‘yes’ to the potential of Stone Sour being candidates for the festival, now the Blunt leak confirms it.

Maddah hasn’t been especially shy about the forthcoming festival, with sludge metallers Kingdom Of Sorrow, post-hardcore act The Blackout and Cannibal Corpse side-project Six Feet Under, all already confirmed to appear.

While Toronto-bred hardcore act The Cancer Bats also confirmed they’ll be appearing, following the announcement  that their earlier Australian tour in July was cancelled, a press release from the band rescheduled for confirming that the band will “instead return for Soundwave 2013 which means they will now be performing in all 5 state capitals.”

The rumour mill, often churned by Maddah’s own social media feed, has also turned up a bunch of other potential acts, including Machine Head, Periphery (whose new album Periphery II is one of the year’s most diverse metal releases); along with ever-present whispers of a headline from Blink 182.

Likely contenders after drummer Travis Barker let slip that the punk trio are due in Australia next February, albeit “with a fill in drummer cause I don’t fly.” The heavily-tattooed sticksman has previously admitted that his flying phobia has been an obstacle to the band’s touring schedule ever since his miraculous escape from the airplane crash that claimed the lives of everyone on board bar him in 2008.

It’s worth also placing your bets on Tenacious D, given Jack Black’s recent comments in foreign press about bringing The D back downunder, as well as rock veterans, The Cult. When we spoke to The Cult guitarist Billy Duffy,  he spoke of the possibility of taking their 30th Anniversary Electric tour to our shores: “I know that the Soundwave festival keeps asking us to come and play.”

At the slimmer end of the rumour mill, Triple M speculated that Linkin Park, DevilDriver & Godsmack are all ‘hot tips’, while other acts touted for the bill based on hints for Trivium, Papa Roach and Billy Talent.
