Homebake 2012 Announce Lineup

Homebake 2012 Announce Lineup

Written by Al Newstead on 31 July 2012

Homebake, the annual music and arts festival held at Sydney’s historic domain, is once again coming alive to the sound of some of Australia’s best homegrown talent ans well as a host of comedy, film and arts for December 2012.

The theme running this year is what if those Mayans and their pesky doomsday calendar were right, and the end of 2012 really was the end of it all. Or as organisers put it, “taking the gloom out of doom” with “the biggest party in the park!”

Only, this year is touted as the ‘Global Edition’, why? To accommodate festival headliners BLONDIE. The ‘atomic’ new wave act will be topping a bill to bring their iconic hit-making to Sydney crowds, it’s the first time an international act has joined the usually locals-only bill, and an awesome chance to catch Christ Stein, Clem Burke and the effervescent Debbie Harry in performance.

Adding to the eclectic festival bill will by musical comedian TIM MINCHIN, returning to Australia after vibing off his international success in London and starring role in TV series Californication. He’s second billing behind Blondie, and leading the pack on an eclectic range of Australian acts including legendary rock act THE SAINTS, Aussie hip-hop icons HILLTOP HOODSSOMETHING FOR KATE – in their third festival announcement in the lead up to their comeback album, the genre-hopping, international territory smashing KIMBRA; ANGUS STONE and JULIA STONE playing separately as their solo monikers, Perth’s eminent rock group BIRDS OF TOKYO and the pop/funk nous of DANIEL MERRIWEATHER.

Rounding out the lineup is special ‘best of’ return by 90s favourites SONICANIMATION, TIM ROGERS with full band & special guests, his funk friends THE BAMBOOS, the jangling JINJA SAFARI, Perth rising stars SAN CISCO, Brisbane songstress EMMA LOUISE, psych rock outfit POND, quirky popsters BALL PARK MUSIC, Sydney’s fine SEEKAE, garage dynamic duo DZ DEATHRAYS, hip-hop visionaries DIAFRIX, alt-folk’s HUSKY, pop act SAM SPARRO, SHAPESHIFTER, SIX60 and FULL TOTE ODDS.

…and that’s just the first round of announcements for the festival.

Along with a riveting selection of cinematic treats at the HOMEBAKE Cinema Pavilion and monstrous giggles at the Comedy Stage; it’s looking to be one of the festival’s biggest and most comprehensive lineups in its 17 year history.

Tickets go on sale Thursday August 16th at 9am  for the Over 18′s Only Event, to be held at Saturday December 8th in the Domain (Royal Botanic Garden, Central Sydney) for a very special day of entertainment.

Most Memorable Festival Performances
Most Memorable Festival Performances

There’s a hell of a lot at stake when performing at a festival – potentially the biggest crowd of an artist’s career, being pitted against nature’s elements, sound and lighting that could go wrong at any moment. There’s the pressure to blow the act after you off stage, there’s the pressure to live up to hype and show that you are capable of pulling off a show on a massive stage. Mnay acts have come a cropper when trying to do this but many have risen to the occasion; the adrenaline and the massive crowds either overcoming them or proving that they are capable of being one of the best bands in the world. Join us as we count down some of the best festival performances ever. Watch this slideshow »
