Perth indie synth poppers Voltaire Twins are proud to announce the release of their third EP Apollo and an accompanying national tour.
Apollo follows on the back of what has already been a massive 2012 for the group, seeing them showcase at both South By South West (SXSW) and Canadian Music Week (CMW), a national tour with San Cisco, support slots for The Maccabees and Van She, and the recent release of Young Adult, the first track lifted from the new EP.
Immediately added to Radar Radio and spun nationally on Triple J, Young Adult’s accompanying video again put on full display the bands talent for amazing clips, with Rage playing it for months and CH 10’s Radar TV also giving it a national airing. As if all that wasn’t enough, the twins also recently took out the award for best Dance/Electronic Act of the Year at the 2012 West Australian Music Awards (WAMi’s). With half the year still to go it’s fair to say 2012 is shaping up well.
Which brings us to Apollo. Up in its entirety to stream on the Voltaire Twins Soundcloud , the EP blends ruminations on youth and innocence with their signature synth pop hooks. All four tracks on the EP are essentially meditations on the past. Born from a number of sessions of the twins telling each other stories and remembering important events from their childhoods, Jaymes and Tegan wrote the skeleton of most of the tracks in the studio before taking them to the rest of the band who fleshed out the instrumentation and arrangements. Produced by Matt Gio (who also plays drums in the group) the EP was mixed by the legendary Lars Stalfors from the Mars Volta (except Young Adult) – who managed to find a new, fresh and contained sound within the bands signature indie disco format.
Apollo swims through a variety of youth-related themes from losing friends who were once heroes in Solaris, to the idea of a never ending summer in Jump Cuts. Young Adult and Silhouettes also explore youthful sexuality, fantasy and early relationships, the latter of which was actually based on a short story the band wrote around a year ago.
Live, Voltaire Twins have been earning themselves quite the reputation for formidable performances over the past 18 months. Catch them launching ‘Apollo’ nationally in August and September, including a coveted showcase slot at Brisbane’s upcoming Big Sound Music Industry Conference:
