A Morrissey Australian tour 2012 has been announced, which will see the legendary frontman for The Smiths visit Australian shores the for the first time in more than a decade for a run of shows this December.
Often credited as the man who patented indie music for the masses; Morrissey’s wit, swelling guitar anthems and signature sorrow have defined a musical path that many other bands have since travelled down.
Morrissey is often surrounded by controversy too, with the outspoken singer not afaird to say what he thinks when it comes to the British monarchy, eating meat, and even immigration – the later of which he was accused of being racist by NME.
The particular comments quoted the former Smiths star as saying “although I don’t have anything against people from other countries, the higher the influx into England the more the British identity disappears.” Adding that, “the gates of England are flooded. The country’s been thrown away.”
Morrissey then responded with a defamation claim seeking libel damages against the magazine‘s then-editor, Conor McNicholas, and its publisher, IPC Media. Stating that the publication had “deliberately tried to characterise me as a racist… in order to boost their dwindling circulation.” Adding that “I abhor racism and oppression or cruelty of any kind and will not let this pass without being absolutely clear and emphatic.”
It’s been a few years since the singer first launched legal action, and Britain’s most senior libel judge passed a jury trial on the defamation case at the beginning of the year, but NME finally relented and apologised for the remarks a few months ago.
Joining Morrissey on tour will be American singer/songwriter Kristeen Young. The talented performer has been supporting Morrissey across his 2012 world tour. Young’s performances are marked by wildly emotional energy and mastering of the piano.
With anticipation high, these shows are sure to sell out. Don’t miss the chance to see the enigma that has sold millions of albums across his career when he tours this December.
