Sugar Mountain Festival 2013 Adds More Acts To Lineup

Written by Al Newstead on 5 October 2012

It seems like only yesterday that we were enjoying the sweet alternative sounds of Sugar Mountain 2012, but of course next year’s iteration is already rolling full steam ahead, with the first lineup announcement arriving a few weeks back that organisers had enlisted the likes of the South Bronx-based Scroggins sisters of ESG, the dream pop stylings of Laurel Halo, emerging hip hop maverick Action Bronson; and one of Australia’s most innovative guitar players and musical extremists, Kirin J Callinan.

Curated by To and Fro Family, Two Bright Lakes and Wing & Gill, Sugar Mountain’s selection was as inspired a mix of acts as it was small, with only seven names confirmed for the 2013 bill – there was bound to be additions.

Today, those additions have arrived with Brooklyn’s DIRTY PROJECTORS leading a pack that includes BROTHERS HAND MIRROR, COLLARBONES, FORCES X ANTHONY HAMILTON, HUNX AND HIS PUNX, JONIT, NAYSAYER AND GILSUN and a couple of our favourite acts with Google-proof band names: LOWER PLENTY and BOOMGATES.

Dirty Projectors frontman Dave Longstreth and his lovely musical cohorts are currently enjoying the critical success of their latest release, this year’s Swing Lo Magellan (which Longstreth handily broke down track-by-track for Tone Deaf) and are currently touring American then Europe before making their way to Australia.

It will be the band’s first visit since a spate of sideshows for 2009′s Golden Plains (which yesterday announced Cat Power as the first act for its 2013 bill), while a number of Australian acts round out the 2013 additions to Sugar Mountain Festival.

The experimentally laced electronica of Adelaide/Sydney duo Collarbones is a perfect fit for the bill, and as one half of the group, Marcus Whale told us in a recent interview, any opportunity to tour is a chance for the two – who usually compose via email – to be together. Speaking of their latest album Die Young,Whale admits “there is still a large proportion of [Die Young] that wasn’t done in person.”

Tickets for the 2013 Sugar Mountain Festival are on sale now via The Forum Box Office, Ticketmaster and Polyester Records.
