Gotye Leads Singapore Laneway Festival 2013 Lineup

Gotye Leads Singapore Laneway Festival 2013 Lineup

Written by Al Newstead on 1 November 2012

When organisers of St Jerome’s Laneway Festival first teased their sensational lineup the indie fan’s music event of choice also promised that the lineup for its international leg in Singapore would be forthcoming.

As TheMusic reports, they’ve now revealed the full lineup, including many of the great acts that are already locked in to play the Australian version of the festival in January/February 2013. Including the likes of mystique alt-songbird Bat For Lashes, Leeds’ most famous musical eccentrics alt-j (∆), as well as Cloud Nothings, Divine Fits and more, there’s also a strong Australian presence to the international bill.

Leading the lineup is global superstar Gotye, who – in the wake of five ARIA nominations – will headline the Singapore iteration of the Laneway Festival, now in its third year.

It goes without saying that Mr. Wally De Backer has had a sensational year. Following the release of his third studio album, Making Mirrors at the tail-end of last year, his star has risen to ridiculous heights, and joining the pop collage purveyor on the bill is his ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ singing partner, Kimbra.

No slouch in capitalising on the international attention herself, the NZ-via-Melbourne neo-soul maverick is already in possession of a killer band and equally brilliant live show, so she’s set to light up the stage; but having the pair on the same lineup means the crowd could get another showing of the ubiquitous, world-conquering duet - recently named the highest selling single of 2012.

Also well on track for their plans on global domination are fellow Australians, Perth cosmonauts Tame Impala, who following on from adding more dates to their Australian tour in December, as well as storming international and local charts and critical circles – will be performing at the The Meadow at Singapore’s Gardens By The Bay for Saturday 26 January.

From a business perspective, Laneway Festival organisers hope that the Asian leg of the event would help lure more international artists to take part in the festival, and by association, make the hop across the water to the Australian incarnation of the event as well; while sales of Laneway Singapore would help steady the Australian events during economic downturns.

There’s a hell of a lot at stake when performing at a festival – potentially the biggest crowd of an artist’s career, being pitted against nature’s elements, sound and lighting that could go wrong at any moment. There’s the pressure to blow the act after you off stage, there’s the pressure to live up to hype and show that you are capable of pulling off a show on a massive stage. Mnay acts have come a cropper when trying to do this but many have risen to the occasion; the adrenaline and the massive crowds either overcoming them or proving that they are capable of being one of the best bands in the world.
