Melbourne’s favourite all girl psych-rock quintet Beaches are back and have revealed new single ‘Send Them Away’, along with launch dates for their second album ‘She Beat’s, due out on Chapter Music on May 3.
It’s been five years since debut album Beaches, which was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize and made it into 2010 book 100 Best Australian Albums. In the intervening years, the band have toured the US twice, played All Tomorrow’s Parties at the invitation of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, released an EP for NYC label Mexican Summer, shared stages with the likes of Roky Erickson, Deerhunter and Wooden Shjips, and even celebrated the birth of beautiful twin daughters to guitarist Alison Bolger.
With a second album always on the cards, Beaches have once again joined forces with producer Jack Farley (Twerps, Scott & Charlene’s Wedding) to make the long awaited ‘She Beat’s’ And like its predecessor, the album reflects a love for 60s pop, 70s psych, shoe-gaze, prog, southern boogie and Krautrock.
Teaser track ‘Distance’ which features German guitar icon Michael Rother (Neu, Harmonia), emerged last month with excitement from Beaches fans. Now the next new single ‘Send Them Away’ has hit the online airwaves and is upfront, glorious pop. Elsewhere, Veda sees the band extending hypnotically eastward, while droning cello scrapes introduce Tanzanite. All up, ‘She Beat’s’ is rich, confident and layered, a multi-dimensional sonic world to get lost in over and over again.
The album will be available through Chapter Music on May 3 and catch the band on tour during June.
