Spring And Fall is the 19th studio album of legendary Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly. Released October, it acted as an instant reminder of Kelly’s peerless songwriting prowess, with our Tone Deaf reviewer handing it a 9/10 score and proclaiming: “Simply put, the 11 tracks here (12 if you’re patient) are another example of why Paul Kelly is Australia’s finest singer-songwriter.”

Australian audiences were gifted a small selection of Spring And Fall numbers when Paul Kelly teamed up with the equally iconic Neil Finn for a co-headline tour of the nation in February, leaving a trail of stunned reviewers in their wake. But now Kelly is putting the spotlight back onto his 19th record, with an extensive national tour of the country through July and August.

Performing in cities and towns around Australia, the 58-year-old veteran will be playing Spring And Fall in its entirety, followed by a selection of his diamond-standard songbook, with favourites, timeless classic, as well as a few obscurities and hidden surprises.

Speaking recently on stage while touring America, Kelly remarked of his latest critically acclaimed album. “Spring And Fall is a song cycle, which is just a fancy way of saying – if you listen to the songs in order they tell a story. Each song links to the next and the whole piece is a love story told from multiple points of view.”

Paul Kelly’s touring band will feature his equally talented familial member Dan Kelly on guitar and vocals, along with J. Walker (who co-produced and played on the record), bassist Zoe Hauptmann (who joined Finn and Kelly on their recent tour), and drummer Bree Van Reyk (who’s beat the skins for Holly Throsby and Seeker Lover Keeper previously).

Joining as support for Paul Kelly on his Spring And Fall Tour, opening the show each night is Hip Hop MC, Producer, and Elefant Traks label head, Urthboy. The Australian Music Prize Nominee and AIR Award-winning artist first worked with Paul Kelly in 2008, when he reworked Kelly and Kev Carmody’s song from Little Things Big Things Grow to celebrate Kevin Rudd’s apology to the Stolen Generation.

Urthboy and Kelly then teamed up again recently to pay tribute to Hunters And Collectors, covering their tune ‘True Tears of Joy’.

Urthboy’s most recent studio effort, Smokey’s Haunt was critically applauded both at home and abroad, earning the multi-talented rapper a nod in last year’s Australian Music Prize. “I was thinking of this gathering place, this meeting place where people come together, and in my music I think of it as a meeting place,” the rapper said of the album’s title and concept in an interview with Tone Deaf ahead of his nomination last year.

The unique combination of an Australian songwriting national treasure and one of hip hop’s most respected artists is a one-of-a-kind, promising an intriguing night’s entertainment, and may be the first and last chance to hear Spring And Fall in its entirety.
