The Perth Festival 2014 lineup was announced overnight, and among its contemporary music program was a particularly special highlight.

A trio of turntablist producers – DJ Food, DJ Cheeba, and DJ Moneyshot – are presenting a live tribute to the Beastie Boys and their genre-defining sophomore album Paul’s Boutique in a special event entitled Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix.

Three years and over 150 tracks in the making, the trio of DJs will be gracing the stage at Perth Festival and have just announced two extra sideshows in Melbourne and Sydney, where they will perform their labour of love, an epic mixtape that painstakingly reconstructs the landmark 1989 LP in full, as a live love letter to the influential hip hop trio.

As previously reported last year, following the tragic passing of Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch, Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix manages to untangle the labyrinthian mess of samples that the Beastie Boys, and production crew The Dust Brothers employed to create Paul’s Boutique.

Many producers and budding musicophiles have attempted to decode the album’s sample-heavy soundscape, with the meticulous study and hard work of British DJs Food, Cheeba, and Moneyshot managed to accomplish where many had failed.

DJ Food explained at the time that the hour-long mix, christened after a Paul’s Boutique B side, was constructed from poring over “a cappellas, period interviews and the Beasties’ own audio commentary from the reissued release.” Created in association with UK radio show and Ninja Tune mix series, Solid Steel, the mix was originally inspired by a 2009 mixtape by Moneyshot called Beastie Boys Beats.

Food (aka Strictly Kev) explains he and his scratch masters were “over half way finished when we heard the tragic news of Adam Yauch‘s passing” in May, his death galvanised them to finish their ambitious project, which has subsequently been touted as a tribute to the fallen MCA.

The final result is an alternate version of Paul’s Boutique that draws from a mind-boggling 150-plus tracks, and DJ Food has even listed an exhaustive track-by-track, sample-by-sample breakdown on his own website.

The turntablist also writes: “Big respect to Cheeba and Moneyshot for all their hard work and for the latter for inspiring the project with his classic mix of their [1992 album] Check Your Head three years ago. Obviously massive respect goes out to The Beasties, The Dust Brothers, Mario C. and all involved in the making of the original album.”

The final list of samples and cuts runs at around five pages length, including such artists as Kool and The Gang, Chic, Tower of Power, The Beatles, The Eagles, The Commodores, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC to create the iconic record.

The result is more than just a tribute to the Beastie Boys’ influential 1989 record, its a re-imagining of Paul’s Boutique and an extension of the hip hop trio’s legacy.

Fans can witness the herculean task of these three world-renowned DJs reconstrcuting their masterpiece in the live setting next February.
