Having already hinted that they’d be up for doing “something crazy” with fellow Falls Festival band Pond, MGMT are now offering something really crazy for fans of the psychedelic rockers; the chance to play with them live on stage at the New Year’s festival.

After releasing their self-titled third album this past September, the US duo are rounding out their year by returning to Australia to play all three legs of the Falls Festival, and the band are offering a rare onstage slot to one festival-goer to perform the band’s newest single ‘Your Life Is A Lie’ in a zany manner befitting of one of the year’s strangest music videos.

Not only will the lucky ticket-holder be the envy of fans, but they’ll be placed in an instrumental role that would satisfy even Christopher ‘Needs More Cowbell’ Walken, joining MGMT onstage to “wield a giant drumstick, punctuating each 4/4 bar with an almighty clonk” on an oversized cowbell “that looks like it would be more at home hanging round the neck of Godzilla,” in the words of the Falls Festival team.

So how do you earn the right to fulfil the cowbell-starring role? By winning the ‘Best Dressed’ competition at the Falls Festival Boogie Nights event, hosted at the opening of the festival at each leg, with the fanciest dress of this year’s ‘Intergalactic’ theme being the would-be muso that finds themselves onstage with MGMT.

If you’re looking for inspiration, avoid the obvious Beastie Boys tribute and go diving into the wacky ‘Your Life Is A Lie’ music video and its two minutes worth of insane visuals.

The MGMT competition follows on from the Falls Festival 2013 lineup expanding with more bands (including John Steel Singers replacing Hungry Kids Of Hungary following announcing their split), along with announcing the full arts and comedy programs for all three legs of the festival, including the sold out Lorne and Byron Bay events with tickets still available to the Award-winning Tasmanian leg in Marion Bay.
