Two weeks on from the first acts of the Vivid LIVE 2014 lineup being announced, the full music programme for the Sydney arts festival has been revealed.
The next lineup of artists to join the likes of Pixies, Giorgio Moroder and The Presets’ special collab with the ACO is an equally impressive collection of musical names set to perform as part of the 18 day-long Vivid Sydney festival of “light, music and ideas.”
Topping the latest announcement, in her debut headlining visit to Australia, is hip hop queen Ms. Lauryn Hill. Performing at the Sydney Opera House, the influential Ms. Hill will be drawing from an iconic songbook that includes her breakout materipeal with The Fugees and her seminal 1998 album The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill.
Speaking of strong female performers, St. Vincent is also headed to Vivid LIVE in support of her eponymous fourth studio album, along with the Mercury Prize-nominated noir-pop performer Anna Calvi, and Australia’s own maiden maverick Kate Miller-Heidke.
Other Vivid LIVE 2014 lineup additions include Irish singer-songwriter James Vincent McMorrow, German neo-classical pianist Nils Frahm, The Pet Shop Boys – headlining the Modular-branded presentation at Carriageworks called Modulations (as part of Vivid Music), a tribute to The Avalanches’ Since I Left You spearheaded by Sydney beatmaker Jonti, and South African wailer Penny Penny and his seven-piece band heading the Goodgod Small Club Studio Parties.
The Vivid LIVE Studio nights series will also make a return with the next in Siberia Records’ Siberian Nights showcase, with Midnight Juggernauts premiering their interactive music experience AERIALS, the Australian debut of Modern Love mainstay Andy Stott, as well as Aussie acts Black Vanilla, Forces, Cassius Select, DCM and Four Door.
R.I.P. Society will also celebrate their 5th Birthday at Vivid LIVE with a left-field rock lineup featuring The Dead C, Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys, Woollen Kits, feedtime, Native Cats, Rat Columns, Cured Pink, Holy Balm, Ghastly Spats, Housewives, Constant Mongrel, Half High, and Wallaby Beat DJs.
There’s also a showcase presented by Sydney’s Astral People featuring Chicago acid-house pioneers Phuture, joined on a bill featuring emerging acts such as Rainbow Chan, Andras Fox, Ben Fester, and Preacha. Future Classic will also curate a dance night, with a lineup to be announced from the Sydney label that’s home to Flume, Jagwar Ma, Touch Sensitive, and more.
Then there’s the already announced performances from indie rock veterans Pixies, playing a four-night Opera House residency, a Q&A and DJ set from Italo-production hero Giorgio Moroder, as well as a symphonic tribute to his work; plus The Presets performing Timeline with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
Now entering its sixth year, Vivid LIVE will take place this year from Friday 23rd May to Sunday 1st June (as part of Vivid Sydney which runs until Monday 9th June), and in tradition, the ‘Light The Sails’ installation will see stunning projections and visuals cast upon the Sydney Opera House. The honour this year goes to 59 Productions, the award-winning team behind the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony and international exhibition phenomenon David Bowie Is.
