Nickelback cop enough heat without having this sort of thing happen to them, but the band’s drummer Daniel Adair apparently has a big fan in 45yo Howard Koenig, who has just been charged with using the muso’s credit card and identity in an attempt to scam his way into $25k worth of musical gear.

As reported on Billboard, Koenig ordered the huge amount of gear from Austria, presumably guessing that nobody would bat an eyelid at a well-paid drummer grabbing such a huge haul of new equipment, but it didn’t quite work out that way.

“Essentially, when he placed the order in Austria, I guess at this level of band … you have a lot of people that work for you,” said Detective Paul Griffith of the Port St. Lucie Police Department to the TC Palm. “One of the people in his group thought it was out of the ordinary when they were getting contacted as to confirming the order.”

Adair and his people used the shipping address to search online for a drummer in Florida who may have used a setup similar to the one that was ordered and, together with the IP address used for the order, Koenig was able to be tracked down pretty easily by police.

Koenig apparently wants to send Adair an apology, but it’d be easy to doubt his sincerity, considering he was busted for fraud back in 2009 when he collected almost $80k USD for a charity concert that never went ahead. He had to spend three years in prison and repay the money he stole, and he’s probably looking at an even longer sentence this time around if his past transgressions have any say in the matter.
