Australia’s much-loved pop punk pioneers BODYJAR are readying their ripping new tunes from new album Role Model’to hit the road to make Dad jokes all over the country, starting this week. From what we hear, they’ve been digging through the (J)archives to piece together an extra exciting set comprised of melodic, singalong, energetic punk rock gems both old and new. Catch ’em showing local mates Luca Brasi and The Sinking Teeth how it’s done on the first Bodyjar headline tour in yonks and yonks.

We sit down with drummer Shane Wakker and discuss his favourite food.

What were your food influences when you were growing up and what kind of food did you eat at home or with your family?

When I was a kid we would eat all sorts of things, lots of meat and veggies, pasta, casseroles, things like that. Also as my family is Dutch we would have things like salted liquorice, speculass which is a spiced cookie, different puddings with custard and lots of cheese!

What dish or cuisine do you most like to eat on tour and why?

I really like anything fresh and made with good product, like a good curry and rice or a nice pasta. I’m not into eating anything fast food.

What are your favorite tour van or plan munchies?

I really like mixed nuts, apples and I’m a sucker for a packet of chips.

What type of food do you make sure to avoid before a gig or going on stage?

I try not to eat to big a meal too close to playing. I like to have a late lunch then maybe a light snack before I play like a sandwich or fruit, then eat something after the show just to top up what I lost while playing. This could be anything, just depends what’s available at the time.

What’s the most outrageous food you’ve ever asked for on a rider?

3 packets of corn chips and 682ml of salsa. We have very specific corn chip to salsa ratios we like to stick by.

What has been your biggest cooking disaster to date? Tell us the story.

I’ve only had one time that I’ve made something totally un-eatable. I tried making a nasi goreng once, followed a recipe but it just didn’t seem or taste right, and I couldn’t work out why! Then I thought I can maybe try fix it with a bit of on the spot improvisation, that messed it up even more so in the bin it went. No “Nasi” for you!

Imagine Bodyjar are throwing a dinner party and could invite any musician or celebrity who would you invite and why?

I would have to invite Miles Davis (yes I know he’s not alive), he would bring the “cool” to anything he rocked up at and that would make our dinner party A1.  Would have to let him blow his trumpet too!

What are your favourite music venues to eat at internationally and locally? Tell us why.

Locally I reckon the Corner Hotel here in Melbourne and Republic Bar in Hobart are the bees knees. Overseas I have to say just anywhere in Japan, the place is amazing for food!!

If Bodyjar could invent a candy bar what would it be? Tell us what you would name it and what flavors it would have.

I think it would have to be a chocolate bar with nuts and honeycomb, as well as a caramel glue holding it all together on the inside. It would be called the “Jar Bar” with the slogan “Forget having half’a bar, get a Jar Bar”

If you were to cook a meal for the support bands Luca Brasi & The Sinking Teeth at the end of your ‘Role Model’ album tour as a thank you what would you cook them?

We could cook them a massive pot of curried sausages, and desert would be a golden gay time to share (if they were a bunch of knobs, but they’re not!) Sooooo, you can’t go wrong with a good ol BBQ with all the good stuff (fish, prawns, steaks, snags, hamburgers and a bunch of home made salads) and of course plenty of beers!
