The Perth synthpop duo of Jaymes and Tegan Voltaire bring a selection of sparkling champagne songs (mixed by Mars Volta’s Lars Stalfors) that display the Twins’ strong potential.

Voltaire Twins don’t get tangled in abstract concepts or tangled rhyming; the songs are simple contemplations on the disillusionment of youth. These musings are laid on a foundation of astral synthesisers and choirs with the Twins sharing the lead vocal line.

What they don’t do is take big sonic risks. They lay the hook, add the crushing drum overdubs, and their vocals are laid over each other – which does become a bit predictable.

What is exciting however, is how extremely catchy the songs are. The hooks are as clean cut as diamonds, ‘Young Adult’ winning for the nostalgic melody contrasting with the hopeful lyric of the chorus.

It’s a charming listen, with the promise that they’re saving all their tricks for their first full length.
