Coming off the hugely successful breakout album Wonder, it was clear Lisa Mitchell would have to strap on her songwriting shoes and provide listeners with another infectious dosage of naturally delicate and intricate songs. Something listeners of her new instalment, Bless This Mess, will quickly be blessed with.

Introducing the new work with tracks ‘Providence’ and ‘So Much To Say’, Mitchell combines a talented songwriting logic with her soothing, cheerful lyrics, quickly seducing listeners to continue to discover what else is provided on Mitchell’s newest creation.

Mid-way through the album, the quirkily named, ‘The Story Of The Raven And The Mushroom’ provides an upbeat and spiritual listening experience, something that fans may expect from the songstress as she takes the stage at this year’s Falls Festival.

The back end of the album sees Mitchell deliver a rocked out track in ‘You Pretty Thing’, giving listeners ever more reason to put this record above others in their collection; perhaps the songbird could one day branch over to a rock n roll bird?

The album draws closer to its end with track ‘Diamond In The Rough’, which provides a simplistic, easy listening experience, as rising and falling arpeggios to soothe the soul.

Finishing up, Mitchell teases listeners with another slow-rock styled jam, ‘I Know You’re Somewhere’, transitioning between some tight piano phrasing to some melodic guitar articulation.

Further showcasing Mitchell’s versatility as both a vocalist and exciting pianist, title track ‘Bless This Mess’ and ‘Better Left Unsaid’ clearly parade Mitchell’s talents whether they be performing individually or with the backing of a full band. Either way, she excels.
