Only forming at the beginning of this year, this Sydney four-piece are already supporting the release of this ‘mini-album’.

Yes, you’ve heard it right. This not quite EP, not quite album is seven tracks or rather, seven very convincing reasons to herald the arrival of Battleships.

The three previous songs that were released earlier this year gave us an insight into their atmospheric rock tendencies.

‘Your Words’, with its euphoric chorus and pulsating riffs gives something to latch onto and it works well as a memorable pop opener.

Early single ‘In Retrospect’ explores a more contemporary pop side by employing the use of vocal repetition; the single has an unmistakable brooding excellence.

While the five new tracks on To You stay true to the band’s ambient melancholy, they’re far more mellow than what audiences has previously heard.

Songs like ‘As You’d Begun’ and ‘Inside’ demonstrate the foursome’s ability to go beyond their more accessible early singles with something that goes deeper and requires just a little more love.

Jordan Sturdee’s delicate and light vocals only intensify the emotive experience the band are trying to convey.

In their infancy, Battleships have found their sound and crafted a solid first release, which is rather exceptional for a band that has only been around for year.

To You indicates that the quartet have the right amount of potential to achieve bigger things. This  may just be the first step towards such success.
