Remix EPs can be an interesting and diverse way to spin old tracks and promote the new.

Snakadaktal’s The Sun II EP does exactly that. Featuring brand new song ‘East Of Here’, the radio mix of ‘The Sun II’ from the five-piece’s debut album, and four more tracks remixed by a diverse range of producers, the collection is engaging without ever crossing that elusive line of becoming repetitive.

Having ‘The Sun II’ from their record Sleep In The Water as the opening – and title track – really lets the song stand on its own feet. Melodic, lyrically mature, and with Snakadaktal’s classic harmonies, the stellar tune does incredibly well to support the release.

‘East Of Here’ is your typical Snakadaktal tune – a dreamy mix of electronic and ‘real’ instruments that feature both of the band’s singers, Phoebe Cockburn and Sean Heathcliff. The duo blend together so well, and while the track is nothing groundbreaking, it’s well-written, well-made, and perfectly atmospheric.

As for the producers Just Kiddin, Hayden James, Fractures, and Kilter, the band have picked them well. Although the addition of ‘Fall Underneath’ twice has the potential to become a little disengaging, both remixes are incredibly strong in their own right, highlighting the best track from Sleep In The Water.

An extremely promising band who have been one to watch since winning Triple J’s Unearthed High in 2011, Snakadaktal just move from strength to strength, with each release more mature than the last.
