There’s something infectious about every record that Major Lazer have released. Now, the trio are back with a five-track EP headed by the mastermind American DJ/producer Diplo and DJs Jillionaire and Walshy Fire.

‘Aerosol Can (feat Pharrell Williams)’ provides a fantastic first look into the EP and does not disappoint. It’s the kind of collaboration that plays to the producer’s strengths without diminishing the influence of Williams, quite similar to the fantastic production techniques heard in ‘Get Lucky’ by French duo Daft Punk.

Sean Paul’s vocals during  ‘Come On To Me’ tie in perfectly with the overall sound of this release. His relaxed lyrical delivery almost lulls you into some sort of tropical daze, and then bang – Major Lazer hits you with an utterly frantic kick that’s bound to leave the listener dancing around like a crazed, sweaty lunatic.

However, ‘Sound Bang’ isn’t their finest work. The touch of steel pan drums add to a very relaxed sound before another huge, fun kick – but it’s not particularly refined. In fact, it’s hard not to reminisce back to listening to Happy Hardcore.

At this point, Apocalypse Soon has the potential to let itself down. However, plaudits are redeemed on the final two tracks. ‘Lose Yourself’ combines all that’s good about Major Lazer’s past and present releases. It’s easy to get roped into the hip-swinging intro with a fat baseline, followed by some fantastic lyrics from Moska and RDX, which largely enhance the overall sound. The drums are incessant throughout before ending on a real high note with the closing track, ‘Dale Asi’.

The final offering has a real hip hop edge infused with reggaeton. It’s a welcome change of pace, and a chance to catch your breath after the previous 16 minutes of organised and infectious chaos that is Apocalypse Soon.
