One of the things they tell you in show business is to never work with children or animals. But we'd advise animals to keep as wide a berth as possible from musicians which we can all agree can be a wild and weird bunch.
So naturally when the two collide things can and do go wrong. Join us as we take a look at some of the more unfortunate, and sometimes deadly encounters between musicians and animals.
Johnny Cash relapsed into addiction after being administered painkillers for a serious abdominal injury in 1983, the result of Cash being kicked in the gut by an Ostrich he kept on his ranch.
While hitting the high note at a concert in Mansfield Massachusetts, Cyndi Lauper had a pigeon shit in her open mouth. She simply wiped her tongue on her sleeve and kept on rocking.
Kings of Leon had to end a concert in St. Louis after just three songs, when a pigeon decided to shit in bassist Jared Followill’s mouth. The band later apologised on twitter, saying it was too unsanitary to continue.
Chris brown was sent running in fear earlier this year after being attacked by a flock of seagulls while relaxing on a beach in Miami. It seems even the most annoying animal in the world doesn’t like Chris Brown.
Columbian superstar Shakira, was attacked by a sea lion as she tried to pat the marine mammal on vacation in Cape Town this year. Her brother managed to save the singer, hauling her out of the way before the feisty sea lion could gain a grip. Sadly Shakira did injure herself on the rocks during the incident, posting a picture on facebook of a small scrape she obtained on her hand. Poor thing.
A lion cub bit Bloc Party guitarist and outspoken vegetarian Russel Lissak during a visit to a wild animal sanctuary in South Africa in 2010. To make matters worse, Russel was taken to a hospital for treatment, which subsequently had to be quarantined due to the deaths of two male patients to a mysterious virus. Luckily Russel managed to vacate the hospital just in time to be involved in a car accident on the way home.
American rock and roller Ted Nugent ran into trouble this week after he was charged with illegally killing a bear during a hunting party in Alaska in 2009. A film crew hired to follow Nugent on his hunting escapades caught the illegal act on camera.
Cold Chisel recently had to postpone their Melbourne show after guitarist Ian Moss was bitten by the family cat. The bite became infected and Moss was unable to play guitar.
Andrew Elstner, guitarist from Florida based band Torche, was treated for rabies after a bat pissed into his right eye. Elstner was staying with an old roommate in St. Louis when he entered one room and switched on the light to find a bat trapped inside. It turns out the excitement was all too much for the bat who flew past Elstner’s head and broke the seal.
In 2009 19-yr-old Canadian folk singer Taylor Mitchell was attacked by a group of Coyotes leading to her death. Mitchell was walking through Cape Breton Highlands National Park when they attacked her.
Alice Cooper is well known for a lot of things, including the use of proprs and sometimes animals. During one show at LA’s House of Blues things didn’t go quite to plan as Cooper’s mammoth snake shat all over the stage.
In a heartfelt moment during the Brian Jones tribute gig at Hyde Park in 1969, Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger dedicated a reading to him and went on to release thousands of butterflies. The tragic part being that most of the butterflies were already dead.

Cooper’s knowledge of obviously doesn’t stretch very far as he threw the chicken into the crowd expecting it to fly away. Unfortunately and tragically for the chicken it only made it as far as the first few rows occupied by disabled people in wheelchairs who then tore the chicken to pieces.
Perhaps one of the better-known interactions between musician and animal is that of Ozzy Osbourne. After signing his first solo record deal in 1981 Ozzy bit the head off a dove, spat the head out with bloods on his lips in front of record company executives. Along similar lines in 1982 during a gig in Iowa, Ozzy bit the head off a bat that he believed to be rubber.
