Lego has licensed many popular franchises in recent years. Everything from Star Wars to Spiderman and Thomas The Tank Engine has been given the brick treatment in the last decade or so, so why not rock bands? Which is exactly what they did to the likes of Queen, Blur, and Spinal Tap for 2009 videogame Lego Rock Band.

Besides who doesn’t love Lego? Malaysian artist and major Lego enthusiast Adly Syairi Ramly certainly does, and he’s taken the Danish brick-makers rock star imagination to the next level with his very own customised line of music’s biggest names and most iconic artists.

Currently an assistant VP at Kuala Lumpur TV station, Astro, Ramly is also a former music journalist and in 2011 rekindled his childhood passion for collecting Lego, and specifically the ‘mini-figs’ characters. Since then, his hobby has made him a bit of an internet phenomenon as images of his Lego creations spread (mainly via his prolific Instagram).

The Malaysian mastermind has now amassed quite the rogues gallery of bands, from UK legends to hip-hop royalty, punk legends and beyond. Even more impressively, every image was shot, edited, and produced entirely on his iPhone 5. No Desktops required.

But the biggest hurdle, as Ramly tells Poskod.MY, is doing “Legolised version[s] of African-American personalities” because of the limited range of darker-skinned coloured Lego minifigures. Perhaps they should heed his call, judging from these 20 Legolised portraits, he’s already mastered his craft; let him expand his canvas.
