Originally African American slang for sex, Rock n’ Roll and nudity go hand in hand like so many other fine couples. Occasionally, when heat and tension rises just enough (and the crowd is super lucky), rockstars are known to strip it all off at their shows, (or other people’s shows as the case may be). In this slideshow Tone Deaf takes you through some of our favourite onstage nude moments for all you fanboys and fangirls out there that haven’t been lucky enough to make it to one of these events.

Hawkwind – Stacia
Who better to be first on the list than the female pioneer of onstage nude exuberance? Stacia was recruited as a regular fixture to the band’s stage show in June of 1971 after doing an impromptu strip show at one of their band practices. This was regarded as more of a form of expression than as an erotic show to her and the band, but as you can imagine, the world was not quite ready for such a spectacle. The band’s audience made a quick transition into teenage peepshow regulars, and eventually Stacia had to begin wearing an array of spectacular costumes. Her legacy lives on though, and now we will take you through some of our favourite on-stage nude moments…

Motley Crue - Tommy Lee
The list of rockstars that have appeared nude at their own shows is seemingly endless. It takes a special kind of rockstar to appear nude during another band’s set though. Who else but Tommy Lee would be the one to pioneer this movement, flashing ‘Little Tommy’ to crowds at Glastonbury in 2000 during Bloodhound Gang’s set.

Rage Against the Machine
Long before nude PETA campaigns, Rage Against the Machine were pioneering the naked protest movement. At an appearance at Lollapalooza in 1993, they stood onstage naked with duct-tape on their mouths and “PRMC” painted on their chests for 15 minutes in protest against censorship by the Parents Music Resource Centre

Jane’s Addiction
During Jane’s Addiction’s final show in 1991, getting caught up in the emotion of it all, Eric Avery and Perry Farrell stripped down and played the last few songs of the show completely naked. There is no photographic proof of this, though it has been confirmed.

The Dandy Warhols - Zia McCabe
In the late nineties, The Dandy Warhols were at their peak, and keyboardist Zia McCabe was better known for standing around and taking her top off than for her actual musicianship. The guys in the Tone Deaf office see nothing wrong with that though, and therefore she makes a star appearance on our countdown.

Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Red Hot Chili Peppers famously penned the term ‘rock out with your cock out’. While they didn’t exactly ‘rock out with their cock out’ when they walked onto stage with nothing but tube socks covering each of their manhood in 1992, having every member of the band (practically) naked on stage at once is a feat in itself, and we think that they’re more than deserving of this place on the list.

Iggy Pop
TPunk figurehead Iggy Pop is rarely seen with his shirt on when performing (although his ageing skin does sometimes give the impression of a leather jacket). In the heat of the performance even his skintight pants can end up around his ankles, and although this nudity is perhaps not always on purpose, Iggy is a more than deserving addition to our list.

GG Allin
GG Allin is well known for his crass onstage antics, ranging from defecating and urinating onstage (and rolling in it), to fist fights with members of the audience. Indeed these antics did include onstage nudity, and teamed with his other antics, Allin stars as a prominent fixture on our list.

Jim Morrison
Jim Morrison’s flirtation with onstage nudity was short-lived. After flashing the audience at a show in Miami in 1969, The Doors’ front man was convicted of indecent exposure and open profanity by a jury in 1970, proving that even rockstars can’t always get away with anything they want. Morrison recently received a posthumous pardon for this.

Courtney Love
Courtney Love has appeared onstage naked far too many times to count, making her a true troubadour of the movement, and a fitting nominee for our number one spot on the list. She doesn’t always look all that appealing, and her nudity isn’t always welcomed, but we give her a tip of the hat for her staying power (even though we certainly won’t be looking in her direction next time she decides to rip her top off at an Australian festival).
