Melbourne’s Lord Mayor Robert Doyle has announced that the Hub of the 2016 Melbourne Music Week (MMW) is to be none other than the iconic State Library of Victoria.

“State Library Victoria is a perfect backdrop for this year’s Melbourne Music Week Hub. It will provide a unique experience inside one of the city’s most recognisable buildings and reinvent the space from its traditional use into a vibrant live music venue,” the Lord Mayor said in a press release.

As the State Library celebrates its 160th birthday this year, it only makes sense that the hub of Melbourne’s knowledge and culture is also the hub for Melbourne’s celebration of music.

State Library Victoria CEO Kate Torney said, “For 160 years the library has been a centre for creativity and discovery so I’m delighted we can continue that role as the Hub for this year’s Melbourne Music Week.”

The week will kickstart on Friday, 11th November in the Queen’s Hall of the Library with Her Sound, Her Story: A Celebration of Women in Music, which features a sensational all female line-up including Julia Stone, Ella Hooper, Mama Kin, Montaigne, Mojo Juju, Ecca Vandal, Elizabeth Rose, Airling and Nyne.

Sunday, 13th November will see quintessential Melbourne band, The Drones will rock the Melbourne Town Hall playing songs from their catalogue as well as their latest record Feelin’ Kinda Free. They’ve even been given the opportunity to play on the mammoth wall-sized organ.

The Sunday will also allow punters to see The Delta Riggs and Pierce Brothers play at the home of sport at LOVE LIVE MUSIC at the ’G. Patrons will be able to walk around the stands of the MCG where they’ll be able to go places usually off limits, such as locker rooms, the new Robert Flower Terrace and the edge of the hollowed turf, all whilst listening to the best music going around.
