Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons and surrogate father to ’90s kids everywhere, is coming to Australia for the first time. Groening, who will be joined by his close friend and fellow cartoonist Lynda Barry, will be in Sydney for the sixth GRAPHIC festival this November.

Between his work on Futurama, his Life In Hell comic series, and his little known indie TV hit The Simpsons, Matt Groening’s contribution to pop culture is near untouchable.

“The most intense Simpsons fanatics I’ve met are from Australia, so I’m coming to Sydney to check out all you lunatics,” Groening said ahead of his Australian debut.

“I’m going to share stories of the making of The Simpsons and show embarrassing home movies and rarely-seen animation, including oddball outtakes and uncensored Itchy & Scratchy cartoons.”

“We can’t wait to share the secrets that Matt Groening will bring to light,” said GRAPHIC co-curator Jordan Verzar, who has been trying to secure Groening for the last six years.

GRAPHIC will also play host to Australian cartoonist Michael Leunig and First Dog On The Moon, which alas is not a live stream with a dog on the moon, but fortunately is actually award winning cartoonist, Andrew Marlton.

There will also be a screening of THX 1138, George Lucas’ original sci-fi film, featuring a live score by Asian Dub Foundation. GRAPHIC will take place at the Sydney Opera House on November 4th and 5th.
